A sports centre has been closed after a member of staff was diagnosed with swine flu.

The man, who works at Mary Webb Sport Centre in Pontesbury in Shropshire, has a mild form of the virus, a spokesman for Shropshire council said.

The centre is used by pupils at Mary Webb School but the council said there were no plans to close the school.

The building has been deep cleaned and the council said officials were liaising with relevant health agencies.

The centre is normally open to the public as well as pupils.

Responding well

Liz Nicholson, director of children and young people's services at Shropshire Council, said: "There are no plans to close Mary Webb School at this time and there is no reason for any parent to be worried about their child's health.

"If anyone does develop flu-like symptoms they should contact NHS Direct."

The man was responding well to treatment, the council added.

Telford Primary Care Trust said there were currently 11 confirmed cases of swine flu across Shropshire.

It said all of them had been given Tamiflu and had responded well to treatment.
