Web casts light on council plans
A Somerset council is considering plans to broadcast its committee meetings live over the internet.

West Somerset District Council is thinking of using webcams at meetings as a way to encourage more people to take an interest in local politics.

The proposals would allow residents to watch debates and vote from their own homes instead of travelling to the council's offices.

Recordings of meetings would also be held in an online archive.

Members of the council's cabinet will decide on the plan - which would cost just under 50,000 - on 19 April.

Council leader Steven Pugsley, said: "This is an exciting idea which can bring our proceedings into the homes and workplaces of residents and others who are interested in our affairs.

"Much of the estimated cost of introducing webcasting can be met by using money given to us by the government."
