Snowfall causes further problems in South Yorkshire

Heavy snowfall has continued to cause travel problems and school closures across South Yorkshire.

More than 200 schools and colleges across the county stayed closed for a second day on Wednesday.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said its patient transport service would only be taking people to essential hospital appointments.

The Met Office has forecast further snow showers and severe frost for Yorkshire overnight.

The A629 at Wortley, the A628 Woodhead pass and A57 Snake pass at Glossop are among roads closed.

Buses stuck

Doncaster's Robin Hood Airport has now reopened, after adverse weather led to the runway being closed.

Passengers due to travel from Robin Hood Airport have been advised to contact their airline direct.

On the roads, First South Yorkshire said a large number of buses had become stuck in snow and drivers were finding journeys hard in "deteriorating road conditions".

Sheffield Council said it had enough supplies to keep main roads gritted, with 400 tonnes of grit being laid down to keep traffic moving on primary and secondary routes.

The council also said it had cancelled this weekend's football fixtures at all its playing fields because of the heavy snow.
