The notes were used instead of ones issued by the Bank of England
|
Rare bank notes produced in Sussex 200 years ago have been sold for more than 12,000 at auction.
The 22 notes were from Rye, Brighton, Chichester and Hastings, and were used as a local, safer option for businessmen in the 19th Century.
They were issued in the towns because at the time it was difficult to get hold of Bank of England notes.
The 5 and 10 notes, some issued by the Hastings Old Bank, were sold in London for a total of 12,017.50.
