Crime-fighting priorities are being put to the vote at a series of consultation events which will help set Surrey Police Authority's budget next year.
The first "You Pay, You Say" event got under way in Woking on Saturday, with more planned over the next two months.
Interactive technology was being used so people could vote on issues and spend Surrey's "Policing pounds".
Police authority chairman Jim Smith said: "As always we will be facing some difficult financial decisions."
He added: "We really want to know from local people what matters most to them."
The Woking event was set to run throughout the day, including budget seminars held by treasurer Ian Perkin for people who wanted to find out about how policing was funded.
Further events are planned in Redhill, Godalming, and Walton on Thames.
