Residents choose Tory candidate

The winner will contest the general election expected next May

Voters are going to the polls in Sussex for the first US-style primary election to be held in the South East.

Residents in the Brighton Pavilion constituency will vote later to help choose the Conservative Party's next parliamentary candidate.

A hustings-style event is being staged at the Grand Hotel to allow people to grill the six shortlisted candidates before then placing their vote.

The winner will contest the general election, expected next May.

Carol Ramsden, chair of Brighton Pavilion Conservative Association, said: "This is one way that the Conservative Party can spread the interest of politics and get the general public who may be voting for the first time, or haven't voted before."

The candidates are Andrew Wealls, Scott Digby, Charlotte Vere, Anna Firth, Douglas Chirnside and Mary Weale.

The vacancy arose after Dr David Bull, a former presenter on the BBC's Newsround programme, stepped down earlier this year.

The Brighton Pavilion seat is currently held by Labour.
