Contract awarded to build artwork

Temenos
'Temenos' is the first of five planned massive public artworks

The contract to build a massive public artwork on Teesside has been awarded to construction company Balfour Beatty.

Temenos, a sculpture by artist Anish Kapoor and structural designer Cecil Balmond, will be the first of five planned "Tees Valley Giants".

The 2.7m structure, situated close to Middlesbrough's famous Transporter Bridge, would stand 164ft (50m) high and 360ft (110m) long.

Work is expected to start early in 2009 and be completed by the summer.

Temenos is a Greek word meaning land cut off and assigned as a sanctuary or holy area.

Neil Barnes, managing director, Balfour Beatty Regional Civil Engineering (Northern), said: "The project will involve working from pontoons over water and include the installation of a mast to support the eye-catching structure.

"The various elements of which will be fabricated together on site and lifted into position as one piece."
