Call for new Wear bridge
Wearmouth Bridge
A new crossing would ease congestion on Wearmouth Bridge
There have been renewed calls for a new multi-purpose bridge over the River Wear.

A Sunderland councillor has said s a new crossing would provide "endless employment opportunities".

Bryn Sidaway - who represents Hendon - believes a new bridge for rail, the Metro, and motor traffic would be an important building block in Wearside's long term development.

He said any motorist caught up in congestion on the Wearmouth or Queen Alexandra bridges would agree that a new crossing is needed.

Councillor Sidaway's views are shared by many other councillors in Sunderland, and he is keen to get people talking about the possibility again.

He said that after the loss of the mines, shipyards, and rope industry it was time to look to the future, including a new bridge to help city grow and prosper.

The cost of a new crossing could be shared between the council and organisations such as the Passenger Transport Authority, Nexus, and regional development agency One North East.
