A County Durham primary school aims to cut congestion at its gates by starting its first walking bus.

From Monday, parents who normally drive their children to Witton-le-Wear Primary school are encouraged to drop them off at a designated meeting point.

The pupils will be provided with high visibility tabards and escorted onto the walking bus.

Sam, Durham County Council's fitness and safety mascot will also be present at a special assembly on the first day.

Head teacher Mark Stephenson said: "The walking bus will remove some of the cars from the road directly outside of school which is heavily congested at both the beginning and end of the school day.

"Parents are being encouraged to drop their children off at the designated meeting point on the High Street and they will then be escorted on the walking bus to school."
