Headlands school may be converted to an independent academy

A troubled Swindon school which came joint bottom in a new national GCSE performance table has been awarded �2.45m funding by the government.
Just 9% of students taking exams at Headlands School in Stratton gained an A* to C grade in 2005.
The money will be used to build a new drama and music room, a sports hall, multi-gym and new administration space.
A spokesman said it would help pupils "meet the needs of the modern curriculum more fully".
He added: "Provision of improved facilities for pupils has come about at the same time as a feasibility study to turn the school into a proposed academy for 11-19 year olds which could be constructed by September 2008.
Garry Perkins of Swindon Borough Council, added: "The education of our young people is the most important aspect of these additional facilities to the school.
"If by creating the right amenities, the children have a better chance to succeed them it has to be the first consideration."
The cash is to come from the Department of Education and Science.
