Health board row call rejected
The Scottish Executive has rejected a call from nursing unions to intervene in the Western Isles health board row.

Staff have given a vote of "no confidence" in the chief executive, chairman and medical director.

They complain morale has hit an all time low with Dick Manson, David Currie and John Smith in the top jobs.

The executive said disputes within the board were for the chairman and his board to resolve in discussion with all staff members.

In a statement, the executive said Mr Currie continued to have the support of his board in introducing changes to services to deal with the financial deficit facing NHS Western Isles.

The statement added there was disappointment that some groups had chosen not to use recognised channels to deal with disputes between the employer and staff.

Unions Amicus, Unison and the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) said the executive's response was "not a surprise".

Last week, a statement from the unions said they had no confidence in Mr Currie, Mr Manson and Dr Smith.

NHS Western Isles is trying to deal with a 2.5m overspend.

Mr Currie said last week the board would go-ahead with the implementation of its 10-point action plan.

He said he was sorry the unions did not want their members to be at the centre of the board's planning and service delivery in the future.

The islands' council has previously called on Mr Kerr to intervene.
