Ageing water pipes to be replaced

A six-month project to replace more than one and a half miles of ageing water pipes is due to begin in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire.

Contractors will begin laying the new water mains on New Stevenson Road, Carfin Street, Woodrow Avenue and Hill Terrace on 15 September.

Residents may experience disruption to water supplies and traffic on some roads will be reduced to one lane.

Scottish Water said the �500,000 work would improve its service to customers.

Project manager Martin McIlvaney said residents would be given 48 hours notice of any changes to their water supplies.

Fresher water

He said: "Ageing pipes will be replaced by modern polyethylene water mains that will provide clearer, fresher, drinking water and will reduce the potential for bursts.

He said some roads would have to be dug-up so workers could reach the pipes, but the company would try to use less intrusive methods where possible.

The work follows a �16m project to improve the volume and quality of water produced at the Daer treatment works.

Water from the reservoir currently supplies Lanarkshire with 114 million litres of water every day. This is expected to increase to 129 million litres when the work is completed next spring.
