People coming to Aberdeen could have more accommodation

It is hoped the plan could end what has been in the past described as a serious shortage of overnight accommodation in the city.

The Radisson company wants to build more than 160 rooms on the site of the former Satrosphere on the corner of Justice Mill Lane and the Hardgate.

It is expected to be open in early 2009, subject to final planning and approval of the scheme.

'Impressive design'

Lee Syrett, business development director of Rezidor Hotel Group, which operates Radisson SAS, said: "We have been searching for a site in Aberdeen city centre for some time.

"This was with the intention of delivering the quality of hotel that is associated with our brand and which also reflects Aberdeen's status as a major UK city and the 'Oil Capital of Europe'.

"We are very excited about the possibility of locating our premium brand on this site in Aberdeen and believe that the extensive facilities and impressive design will make a hugely positive contribution to Aberdeen."

Aberdeen councillors recently backed proposals to attract more prestige events to the city.

A council report said a lack of hotel discounts could thwart efforts to attract more events, but noted that plans for new hotels could help.
