Grampian Police said the 17 drivers could have caused death on the roads

A teenage motorist who has only had a licence for eight months has been charged with dangerous driving without a belt after being caught at 107mph.

Police said the 19-year-old man was detected on the A96 near Barmuckity in Moray.

Officers said they also found a 24-year-old male motorcyclist doing 104mph on the A90 Ellon road, near Blackdog.

Grampian Police said there were also 15 drink-drivers caught during the weekend clampdown.

Road safety manager Leslie Harrold said: "What will it take for these drivers to realise that Grampian Police and the vast majority of the north east public, who are law-abiding citizens, will not accept this type of behaviour?

"We have had to deal with 15 incidents of drink-driving and despite the poor road conditions, two drivers chose to drive at over 100mph. Any of these 17 drivers could easily have caused a death or serious injury on our roads.

"Road conditions will continue to be poor over most of this week, with more snow showers forecast."
