Station bridge contract welcomed
Lockerbie Station - Undiscovered Scotland
A campaign has run for years to upgrade the bridge at Lockerbie
A contract has been awarded to develop disabled access to the southbound platform at Lockerbie station.

Work is due to start on the 1.25m bridge upgrade in May, bringing to an end years of campaigning in the town.

Conservative MP David Mundell welcomed the news from Network Rail of the contract award to Edmund Nuttall - set to be completed by November this year.

He said he looked forward to seeing the footbridge in place after so many "false dawns" for the project.

"This announcement is evidence that we are actually moving forward, it is the first time a contractor has been announced," he said.

Dumfries Labour MSP Elaine Murray said the news would be welcomed by the Annandale and Eskdale Coalition for the Disabled.

"At times they must have thought it would never happen, but they didn't give up," she said.

"I'm sure passengers who are not wheelchair users will also welcome not having to carry their luggage up the stairs too."
