Recession costs region 750 jobs

Closures of Woolworths stores cost a number of jobs in the region

The economic downturn has seen at least 750 jobs lost in the south of Scotland, a study has suggested.

The Scottish Enterprise report has highlighted the construction, forestry and textile industries as being the worst affected by the recession.

Over the last 18 months 460 jobs have gone in the Scottish Borders, along with 290 in Dumfries and Galloway.

It is hoped tourism, exports and brand development in textiles can help address the impact on the area.

Both regions have been hit by a string of small-scale job losses in recent months.

Their cumulative effect has now been assessed by Scottish Enterprise.

It has highlighted a number of key issues facing the south of Scotland.

Construction appears to have been hardest hit, with companies mothballed and the announcement of major redundancies.

Forestry and textiles have also been affected, although some firms have reported winning new contracts.
