Fresh appeal for Falconio suspect
Peter Falconio and Joanne Lees
Mr Falconio and his girlfriend were ambushed
Australian police investigating the disappearance of British tourist Peter Falconio have made a fresh appeal for information.

They want to hear from a man filmed by a security camera at a truck stop last July, the day after Mr Falconio and his girlfriend Joanne Lees were attacked.

Police admit there are "significant" differences between him and the description of Mr Falconio's suspected attacker given by his girlfriend.

However, they want to make contact with him, if only to eliminate him from the investigation.

Brutal attack

The man, who was filmed in Alice Springs, has not been traced, despite images of the man being circulated across Australia over the past nine months.

Mr Falconio, 28, and Miss Lees, 27, were attacked on July 14 last year, as they travelled in their camper van on the deserted Stuart Highway about 190 miles north of the town.

Mr Falconio, from Hepworth, near Huddersfield, has never been found.

Miss Lees, from Almondbury near Huddersfield, told police the attacker tied her up but that she managed to struggle free and escape into the bush, where she hid for six hours while he searched for her with his dog.

She said she heard a gunshot and police believe the hijacker murdered Mr Falconio and dumped his body.

Police criticised

Blood matching Mr Falconio's DNA was found at the ambush scene.

In a television interview in March this year Miss Lees accused Australian police of "taking it easy" over her boyfriend's suspected murder.

Australia's Northern Territory Assistant Commissioner John Daulby told a news conference the driver caught on the security footage was at the truck stop for 12 minutes.

He also bought 117 litres of diesel fuel.

He said that while the man and his vehicle in some ways resembled the description of her attacker given by Miss Lees there were "some significant differences".

Miss Lees said the attacker had a moustache and was wearing a cap like the man in the security footage.

The man in the video was between 40 and 50 years old with shortish dark hair and glasses, while the man described by Miss Lees was younger with long, straggly hair and without glasses.

The vehicle on the video was a Toyota Land Cruiser with a black bull-bar and no gap between the front seats.

But Miss Lees had said the one used by her attacker had a chrome bull-bar and a gap between the front seats.

British tourist Peter Falconio is still missing after an ambush from which his girlfriend dramatically escaped
