Major makeover at Kew's Palm House: moving over 1,300 rare tropical plants

Rebecca Morelle, BBC correspondent
"This is the world-famous Palm House at Kew Gardens. It's more than 175 years old, and it's about to undergo a makeover on a massive scale. What happens to all of these plants here? There's more than 1,300 of them."

This marvel of Victorian engineering is home to a tropical treasure trove, but it's posing a horticultural headache.

Rebecca Morelle, BBC correspondent
“Every pane of glass needs to be removed and replaced, and the rusting metalwork treated and repainted. But to do that, all of these plants need to be taken out.”

Tom Pickering, Head of Glasshouse, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew
"It's a really daunting task emptying the collections from the Palm House. Some of them are historically really significant some are actually older than the glass house itself, while other plants are really important conservation species."

With the plants potted, it's taken on a short journey to its new home.

Rebecca Morelle, BBC correspondent
“This is the temporary glass house where all of the larger species are being stored, and it's where they'll stay for at least the next three years while the work here is being done.”

It's a carefully controlled environment. Plants need to stay healthy but not grow too big.

Rebecca Morelle, BBC correspondent
“We've come behind the scenes to the propagation glass house where the team are growing backups of all the plants, in case any of them don't survive the move, there's a botanical plan B.”

The extinct Myanmar tree is just one of more than 1,000 plants to deal with. It's a huge task, and some of the species are proving a real challenge.

Anja Seymour, Botanical horticulturist, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew
"This is ebony, which is a hardwood tropical species. Typically you would propagate it through seed, but unfortunately our specimen doesn't ever flower and then fruit. We've done over 100 cuttings of this one individual, and all but this one haven't succeeded. So this is our little success story. "

Rebecca Morelle, BBC correspondent
“It's already starting to look pretty sparse in here, but the pressure really is on because in the next six months, everything that's left is going to have to be removed. And not long after that, the work will begin to restore this Palm House to its former glory.”
