Have your say on England men this winter

And breathe! What a completely brilliant and bonkers game of cricket.

As ever, thank you for your company throughout - we'll be back on Sunday morning as England aim to bounce back against Pakistan for their first win of the tri-series.

If you missed any of today's madness, Stephan Shemilt's match report has got you covered - read that here.

    Bye for now!

  2. 'They've played an absolute blinder'published at 17:59 BST

England captain Harry Brook: "Heart-breaking, I think you've hit the nail on the head there. It's very disappointing that we haven't been able to defend 430 but that's life, that's cricket.

"You don't see many teams chase down 430 and hats off to Sri Lanka, they've played exceptionally well. We couldn't execute our skills enough with the ball and again they've just played an absolute blinder there.

"It's extremely disappointing but we know where we went wrong. We'll have a good chat about it now and over the next couple of days. We've got a good opportunity in the next couple of games to really try and get to that final in Lahore."

On his record-breaking score: "Unfortunately it doesn't matter now. I thought we were going to be in a good position but unfortunately it doesn't even count."

On what he'll say to the team: "I think just learn from this. Like I said before, you don't see many sides chase down 400-plus scores. They've played exceptionally well but we've got a lot of learnings to take from this. We've got a great opportunity in the next couple of games to try and solidify a spot in the final which is our main aim in this series. We've got to come back stronger and lift the chins up and crack on."

On the pitch: "Phenomenal wicket as we saw. Nearly 900 runs scored on that pitch is an incredible game of cricket and an incredible game to be a part of. Unfortunately on the wrong side of it but still a very good spectacle."

  4. 'Everyone believes we can do anything'published at 17:53 BST

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis: "I have every confidence and I don't have words to say but anyway the batters have done really well. I think the wicket is pretty good then the guys handled the pressure situation really well. I have no words to say but the guys batted really well and I enjoyed [it] a lot.

"We know we have talent. Some areas we have to improve every game, but I think everyone knows we have the talent now in one day cricket. Today's game will be very important going forward because I think everyone now believes we can do anything. That's the main thing.

On the pitch: "We did not expect 400 [runs] on that pitch. But Harry Brook batted really well. The pitch is so good and the batters like these pitches."

I think this might make England question the balance of their team. I think it has been exacerbated with the top order scoring all the runs.

But we've still had in the hutch today Sam Curran, Jordan Cox, Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson - that's almost too much batting for an ODI team.

  6. How's stat?!published at 17:46 BST

Sam Curran has become the first England bowler to concede 100 runs in ODIs, having gone for 2-103 from nine overs today.

Indeed, he has the two most expensive ODI spells in English history, having previously topped the rankings with 0-98 against the West Indies in North Sound in December 2023.

Pavan Rathnayake is named player of the match for his 130 in Sri Lanka's incredible chase.

Harry Brook scored 202 off 116 balls earlier, but ending up on the losing side must've swayed the vote. We'll hear from England skipper Brook shortly, who must not be able to believe that it didn't end up being a match-winning knock.

Here's where all 123 boundaries (93 fours, 30 sixes) in the match were struck. It's a record for total boundaries in an ODI (4296 matches).

The game completely got away from England. I've been in that position as a bowler before where you're rushing through your overs, you get to the back of your mark quicker and quicker then the ball is disappearing. Everything feels so frenetic and crazy.

Could they have taken more time out of the game?

Magnificent chase from Sri Lanka but that has to be one of the most inept English bowling performances of all time, across all formats. Embarrassing defeat despite the brilliance of the Sri Lankan batters.

    David, Maltby

Absolutely dreadful performance by England in the field but very well done to Sri Lanka for the chase.

It was clearly an absolutely belting pitch to bat on, and the boundaries were pretty small. Still, England's bowling is a concern and they weren't great in the field either (they are without Jofra Archer, of course).

    Here are their bowling figures:

    Atkinson - 0-57 (7 overs)

    Tongue - 3-79 (8.5)

    Overton - 1-77 (10)

    Dawson - 1-71 (10)

    Curran - 2-103 (9)

    Jacks - 0-41 (5)

Staggering. Who would be a bowler? What a crazy pitch for batting on. The bounce was true. The ball came onto the bat the entire day and it just seemed to get better and better as the floodlights came on.

Sri Lanka read those conditions perfectly. They wouldn't have liked to chase as many as they did but they backed themselves to chase down whatever England set them and they did it in remarkable fashion.

    • Chasing 430, both Sri Lanka openers fall inside the powerplay before Avishka Fernando and Pavan Rathnayake recover with a composed stand of 166.
    • Avishka falls for 97 but Rathnayake kicks on to a majestic century, adding a fantastic partnership of 133 off just 79 balls with Dasun Shanaka.
    • They both fall in quick succession by the end of the 44th over, Rathnayake for 130 and Shanaka for 97. Sri Lanka still need 67 off the last six overs.
    • But Janith Liyanage plays a gem of an innings, despite the loss of two wickets in the final over, hitting the winning runs with a six to finish 61 not out off just 27 balls.

Despite a challenging last decade of being a Sri Lanka fan, the team does find a way to give you the odd mad moment of joy. Incredible scenes.

There have not been many times when I have not got much to say other than wow. That whole game of cricket was just wow.

Harry Brook has scored 200. England got 429 and they have lost. There were two batters for Sri Lanka who were both dismissed for 97. They had one man score 130. It's been a game where it's had it all.

England have been sloppy at times but Sri Lanka were sloppy at times. It really has been a game of absolutely everything out there today and I cannot believe England have lost.

Harry Brook's record-breaking 200 feels like a lifetime ago. And he's somehow ended up on the losing side.

Liyanage is still at the non-striker's end and Sri Lanka need seven off three.
