And so ends a largely frustrating opening day to the County Championship with rain and bad light once again affecting play up and down the country.

There were bright enough spots for some to make ground though.

Somerset had an excellent day closing to within a point of Nottinghamshire at the top of the live Division One table after collecting maximum bowling points against Glamorgan at Taunton, closing on 90-0 replying to 194.

Warwickshire made the most of their chance too, reaching 144-1 at bottom side Hampshire, while leaders Notts had only 63 balls against Leicestershire but at least did not lose a wicket.

In the relegation race, Surrey will not be too disappointed reducing Yorkshire to 133-7 in a day largely ruined by rain and covers. Lots of covers.

Division Two leaders Durham had a solid enough day with the bat at Northamptonshire while Kent, their main challengers for second place, fought back late in the day with the ball against Worcestershire, where the sun was still out at stumps.

Worcestershire will be the happier I'd wager having bowled Kent out for under 250 thanks to a run of 5-25.

Then despite a wobble of losing two wickets in two balls, they've gutsed it out well with Dan Lategan and Adam Hose crafting an excellent, definant stand of 54.

Set up nicely for tomorrow.

Must be some kind of microclimate in Kent. It's actually quite sunny given the hour and the weather around the circuit today.

But play on we do and Worcestershire are soldiering on well towards the close still seven overs away.

Dan Lategan (30) and Jake Libby (22) continue to defy the home attack with a mix of good judgement, watchful defence and still a desire to put cuff away any bad stuff.

If they can stay in, probably Worcestershire's day.

A superb day for Somerset in pursuit of their maiden Championship.

They won a good toss and chose to field on a pitch with plenty of grass and then backed it up with some excellent bowling, producing the right length to locate 10 edges.

Ben Kellaway’s 51 was the only innings of note for the visitors, who were boosted by a 10th wicket stand of 36.

But even so it’s looking like a poor score after an excellent start by Josh Thomas, who walks off 46 not out, and Tom Lammonby, on 37, feasting on some loose bowling.

Somerset perfectly placed to take control of the game tomorrow.

Two overs to go and the boundaries keep coming.

But a huge slice of luck for Josh Thomas as he takes an almighty swoosh at a ball slightly back of a length from Connor O’Riordan and gets a huge top edge over the slips to the third man boundary.

Kent 238 v Worcestershire 52-2

Worcestershire inching towards the close with Dan Lategan and Adam Hose at the helm.

They've taken it from 26-2, with two wickets in two balls, to a score that the Pears will be delighted with IF they can get to stumps without any further loss.

Lategan has 25 and Hose 7 off 14 as they tick the balls down.

ELEVEN overs still to play, apparently. Long odds on all those getting bowled.

He survives a HUGE shout for lbw in Mahmud's next over. It's close. Very close, speared in from round the wicket right in the block hole.

Maybe missing leg? That's the only element of doubt that might've saved him.

A patient day at Chelmsford where Sussex won the toss and chose to bat but have been kept well in check.

Sam Cook took two quick wickets before the visitors built to 79-2.

They then slipped to 163-7 but Jack Leaning has steadied the ship with an unbeaten 49 and Don Goodman’s 22 has seen them end the day in a better spot with a fifty stand in 102 balls.

But you’d say Essex probably the happier of the sides.

Glamorgan are seriously rattled here.

Tim van der Gugten sends one down leg that’s clipped to the fine leg fence by Tom Lammonby before he crashes a short and wide delivery to the point boundary.

Forced to turn to spin, Ben Kellaway offers too much width and is twice cut for four by Josh Thomas in the space of three balls.

Six overs remain.

That's it for the day at the Oval after bad light forced the players off with 12 overs still due to be bowled. In total we've seen 60 overs.

A strange day which saw a clatter of wickets at the start as Yorkshire were reduced to 1 for 3.

A stand of 92 for the second wicket between James Wharton and Matthew Revis steadied the Yorkshire innings but once they were broken up after tea the bowlers got on top again.

The wicket takers, Dan Worrall with three and Matt Fisher and Tom Lawes, two each, bowled nicely throughout.

Dom Bess and Kuldeep Yadav did get Yorkshire to the premature close but it's been a good day in between the showers for Surrey.

After losing those two quick wickets, Worcestershire will hope they don't have to face many more of the 15 overs that are optimistically still scheduled for today.

Dan Lategan has just taken Hasan Mahmud for back-to-back boundaries - lashing one beautfully through backward point and the other, with much less authority, uppishly steered through vacant fourth slip.

Light is fading. So that's good news for the Pears...

Somerset 54-0 v Glam 194

Josh Thomas flicks Dan Douthwaite to the midwicket fence and brings Somerset’s 50 up in 71 balls.

Such a great start in reply to a modest total.

But a big missed opportunity for Glamorgan, who have been very poor with the ball and gone at four-an-over so far.

Home side firmly on top.

And that is that for the day at Merchant Taylors' School. Class dismissed.

Not a great day for the few spectators dotted around but Middx have at least rescued a fairly poor start to put themselves in a strong enough position ahead of day two.

Luke Hollman (54) was very good in knocking an attractive and chanceless half century and he was backed up well by Ben Geddes (23).

James Anderson produced the ball of the day - when does he not? - to bowl Max Holden to finish with 2-30.

Back again at 10:30 BST to try again.

After one ball shy of 60 overs have been bowled in the day the umpires have taken them off at The Oval.

Since four wickets fell in less than an hour after tea Yorkshire's experienced eighth wicket pair have offered some resistance.

With 33 test matches between them Dom Bess and Kuldeep Yadav have seen off seven overs scoring 20 runs.

12 overs were still due to be bowled in the day and the umpires have stayed out in the middle but a resumption seems unlikely.

A strong start to Somerset’s reply.

Mir Hamza has been wayward and gone for 22 in his four overs and Josh Thomas has helped himself to four boundaries.

Still plenty there for the seamers but the visitors haven’t got it right so far.

The players didn't get back out after the last break for bad light so will try again tomorrow.

After being 16-2 and 75-3, David Bedingham (57) and Mayank Agarwal (25) repaired the early damage inbetween the stoppages to end what was a pretty decent day's work from the visitors - especially given their decision to bat first.

If conditions are bettter tomorrow, it might be a very good one.

And a very unsatisfactory day it has been with the first session wiped out by rain, the start interrupted by more after just an over, and the tail end of the day spoiled by bad light.

The forecast is better for tomorrow when it is expected to be dry at least so it will be a 10:30 BST start here in Nottingham when both sides will be hoping to grab season defining points.

Still 10 overs to go in CM2 but the light has closed in and could potentially end the day.

Sussex have survived six overs of the new ball so far.
