England have closed on 248-9 from 56 overs with Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue not out overnight on 34 and one respectively.

Pakistan's Muhammad Abbas: "This is my favourite ground. I played my first Test match here in 2018, so I was man of the match. After that I came here with Leicestershire, so I always enjoy bowling here."

On dropped catches: "This is a part of cricket. We do not remember those things. As a professional, we have to look forward and just keep going."

On the morning session: "Yes, we were very happy. We had a meeting upstairs, so our coach said stick to the plan and bowl them out as soon as possible. I think they scored a little bit more [after the morning session]. I think Smith played well, but still we are happy."

On Joe Root's wicket: "We had a plan about him. We got success from there."

Babar Azam is the regular leader and that helped winning the toss. The onus was on Pakistan to make it count.

It was down to Jamie Smith. He came out and played like the Jamie Smith at the start of his Test career.

Really beautifully balanced [today]. I have read a few articles that there's a few questions over Jamie Smith. I don't see that at all. I have watched his keeping. His keeping is rock solid.

You're always going to go through a little period in your Test career where you don't get the runs.

When he is playing that leg-side flick, he is in a good position in his head. He was the key today for England getting to that 248.

I think the way they played at Headingley was the Joe Root blueprint.

One of the main criticisms over the last couple of years is that there has been absolutely no thought to getting into the trenches a bit and soaking up the pressure.

England's Jamie Smith on Sky Sports: "Yeah, a tricky one - it's a decent enough day for us. The ball was still doing enough, nipping around with the overhead conditions.

"They bowled nicely, I think they showed that wickets with the new ball always puts you under a bit more pressure but it did get a bit easier as the ball got softer which helped us as a batting side.

"I found it tough, it's been a lean period for me with some indifferent scores so today I was trying to ride the wave a bit, I know it's not the most free-scoring type of pitch here. You can feel a bit out of rhythm, but you can also catch up quite quickly so once I found a few out the middle of the bat, it helped me a little bit to start a little slower.

"Technically, over the winter I had a bit of an issue with my front foot so I found it quite helpful to go back to Surrey and play a block of red-ball cricket to try and rectify that and I got a bit of success with that at number three, getting exposed to the new ball a bit more.

"I felt that gave me some good rhythm, so coming into the Test stuff it was just trying to adapt that to batting at seven. I was trying to take a bit more time at Headingley but in hindsight I probably should have tried to get going a bit sooner, so today I was just trying to find the right balance.

"I want to keep playing the way I have done in my short career so far, I've had some success with that and it has given me confidence to have the backing from the team if there are any times I have doubted myself. Poking and prodding around is never going to be the best version of me."

I think England will be delighted to get to 248 from 70-4.

I think Pakistan will accept in the dressing room that they have missed their chance and let good situations roll away from them.

Jordan Cox looks a fine player. He looks well-balanced. He looks to me to have the right shots for the better bowlers.

He seems to have the calmness, but he will be disappointed to get out. Your currency is your 100s no matter who you play for.

Let's not forget it is a medium-paced bowling attack [for Pakistan] and when the shine comes off the ball it is reasonably hard to roll over teams.

Jordan Cox stayed in and played some nice shots.

He got into nice positions. He hasn't played much but he looked pretty compact.

Jamie Smith also put in a good effort. He played pretty well. I have enjoyed Mohammad Ali, he is great to watch and he is full of energy.

While we're waiting, treat yourselves to Salman Ali Agha's sensational catch to dismiss Jordan Cox earlier.

Pakistan hadn't been at their best in the field despite their bowlers' brilliant efforts, but this was a moment of magic.

The umpires are having another chat in the middle, but the players are nowhere to be seen.

A healthy number of spectators have stuck around, although I suspect they are feeling pretty frustrated.

I don't think Pakistan will mind that at all, if they can get away with not having to bat for an hour tonight in these conditions.

This session could theoretically go on until 19:30, but in fairness to the umpires on this occasion, it looks very gloomy out there.

It's difficult to see it getting any better from here.

Here comes the light meter, which is greeted by boos from the Lord's crowd.

Oh, that's agonising for Abbas.

He creates the chance for his five-for, drawing a leading edge from Gus Atkinson, but the ball flies between the slips for four.
