England bowler Josh Tongue speaking to Test Match Special: "Great day, winning the toss and putting us into bowl. Getting the wicket off the first ball set the tone. I though we were fairly ruthless as a bowling unit to bowl them out.

"Nice pitch to bowl on, quite a bit in the surface, being brave with the length, getting driven rather than getting cut or pulled. You got rewards as long as you played at the stumps. That's how I got my wickets.

"I like getting the wickets towards the back end and putting the team in a good position. Robbo [Ollie Robinson] said we can split the ball in half. The groundstaff have kindly done that. It's the first time I've seen that happen. I'm sure I'll be putting that up somewhere."

On cleaning up the tail: "Just keep the stumps in play as much as I can. I go about myself with the fuller length, it helps with the batters at the top of the order as well. If I try and keep it as simple as I can, hopefully the wickets will come."

On playing after The Hundred final at the weekend: "It was a quick turnaround for me and Gus [Atkinson] but we did a lot of work behind the scenes at Old Trafford, making sure our bowling loads were what they needed to be for Test match cricket. It's obviously gone very well today and didn't really have to bowl many overs. We made sure we put in the hard work behind the scenes. Good to put the team in a position to win."

On the transition to Root as captain: "It's been class to be back around the lads, had a bit of a bowl. It's pretty much the same, very chilled, the lads were excited to get out here today and play under Rooty.

"There's not much difference, Stokesy was very chilled, Rooty is the same. Asked me what I wanted to do in terms of field placement and he'll back me 100%. That's an unbelievable trait as a captain and makes you very chilled at the end of the mark before you release the ball. I didn't like the break, I was sort of on a roll, I wouldn't minded a few more balls before the tea break. We were happy we got the last few wickets."

The only thing about Ollie Robinson is his fitness. Today though, he just bowled immaculately.

England openers Ben Duckett (15 off 28) and Emilio Gay (33 off 31) both made starts but couldn't capitalise, falling in the space of eight deliveries.

But Joe Root (37 not out) and Jordan Cox (23 not out) steadied the ship with an unbeaten 64-run third-wicket partnership.

After 25 overs, England are 112-2, trailing by 59 runs.

Imam-ul-Haq (42) and Abdullah Shafique (61) rebuilt Pakistan's innings, putting on 91 (140) for the third wicket.

But when opener Imam-ul-Haq was removed by Josh Tongue, things went pear-shaped.

Saud Shakeel took too long to review his lbw dismissal by Ollie Robinson (he would have been saved) and Shafique followed two overs later to leave Pakistan 118-5.

A 32-run sixth-wicket stand between Muhammad Rizwan and captain Salman Agha offered brief hope before the final five wickets fell for 21 runs, Pakistan all out for 171.

Robinson collected 5-51 from 18 overs, Tongue 5-46 from 9.1.

Well, it's been a long old day at Headingley with a rain delay extending play.

England enjoyed the perfect start, with Ollie Robinson striking twice - including with the first ball of the day - to reduce Pakistan to 6-2.

Perfect day really for England. To win the toss and bowl first, bowling them out for 171 and putting up 112 runs on the board after 25 overs, they are really in the drivers seat.

Josh Tongue and Ollie Robinson on the mark today. I worry about this Pakistan attack, three seamers with the same pace, I don't know where the threat is going to come from.

England are 112-2, trailing Pakistan by 59 runs. No prizes for guessing who's had the best of the day.

A bit of spin for the first time today with Ali Usman entering the attack. Azan Awais goes back under the helmet. He's not needed.

Joe Root cuts for four to move into the 30s, pushes into the covers for a rapid three, and finishes the over with a dot.

Quite an un-Joe Root shot there, rather smudging the ball between the slips and gully. Still, a four is a four. 100 up for England.

"Roooooot" echoes around Headingley as the England skipper clips Khurram Shahzad fine for four.

He and Jordan Cox have put on 50 (72) for the third wicket after England lost two wickets in eight balls.
