As for Sri Lanka, this hit-wicket dismissal for Wanindu Hasaranga pretty much summed up their afternoon.

England have now won 15 consecutive T20s against Sri Lanka, a run starting in March 2016.

Meanwhile this win was England's 23rd win in 26 completed T20s since Harry Brook took charge in the summer of 2024.

  4. Postpublished at 17:32 BST 19 September

England captain Harry Brook on his side taking top spot in the world rankings: "Amazing achievement, again, and one everyone should be very proud of.

"Everybody stepped up in this series, especially lads who haven't played as much - Sonny for example. Daws again, an awesome performer, Jos, again. I could go through the whole team. We are adapting to conditions well.

"It [continuing good form] all comes down to adapting to conditions. We want to be a side when conditions aren't in our favour we are able to manufacture a win. It might not be the prettiest but we are trending in the right direction."

On how he will balance white and red-ball commitments: "I have said plenty of times I want to play as much as I can for England, hence why I don't play franchise cricket apart from The Hundred."

  5. 'The time for us to come together'published at 17:28 BST 19 September

Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka: "Very disappointing series for us. This is an important eye opener for us, where we stand in T20 cricket compared to one of the best teams in the world. This is the time for us to come together and find solutions to T20 problems.

"We lost our captain [Kusal Mendis], I'm the acting captain for this series. He is recovering and will come back and join the teams in ODIs. These are the best players right now, we have to find solutions in the right way.

"As players we have to look back and forget everything and prepare for the ODI series. Next year we have the ODI World Cup, the talent is there and recently we've been playing good cricket in ODIs.

  6. 'Just be myself'published at 17:25 BST 19 September

England bowler Sonny Baker: "Really happy. When things go like that you are always pleased. Previous two games the new ball was swinging a lot, today there wasn't much movement at all so adapt to conditions and go from there.

"It is something I have worked hard on, being able to swing ball both ways. It buys you extra margin for sure."

On his improvements since his international debut last year: "My biggest commitment going from my first stint, into my Test debut and this, is be myself out there. Against Ireland I was clutching back how the ODI [against South Africa] went.

"I am a carry-on merchant. Just be myself. Allowing myself to do that is the biggest commitment I have made."

It will be hard for Aneurin Donald. He opens with Jos Buttler who scores quickly and then you have Harry Brook coming in. He will be judged by how the others go around him. He will feel some weight with Phil Salt there to be considered. They are good headaches for England but Donald, from his point of view, will be thinking he has missed out.

You would say 50-over cricket is a different game but Sri Lanka will carry the same baggage. It is the same faces. You hope you find new heroes and someone stands up to push this England team. It is going to be very difficult to get these boys up.

    Pretty dismal from Sri Lanka.

They bowled nine wides, with two of them going to the ropes, plus a no ball.

Eshan Malinga finished with an economy rate of 20.40 from his 10 balls.

England have been way too good. They have smashed Sri Lanka, not allowed them to breathe. The standards we have seen in the field have been of a different level and of a champion team who wants to dominate.

England have had a great summer. They have beaten a good India team and, you have to say, not a very good Sri Lanka team.
