Southend United said they were "deeply saddened" following the death of former striker James Walker at the age of 38.

Walker made 54 appearances for the Essex club between 2008 and 2010, scoring eight goals.

A product of Charlton Athletic's academy, Walker also represented Hartlepool United, Bristol Rovers, Leyton Orient, Notts County, Yeovil Town and Gillingham, before suffering a cardiac arrest in 2019 which resulted in significant physical and mental impairments.

Southend said they will hold a minute's applause in Walker's memory before Saturday's National League fixture with AFC Fylde.
