He is a good of a shout as anybody. His numbers talk for themselves and I said it at half-time he makes a mockery of football. He literally plays quarterback, his biggest idol was Tom Brady and he plays like Tom Brady, and he also like Tom Brady in the clutch moments when you need him, he's the guy every single time.

  6. 'It it has to come from the captain'published at 23:17 BST 21 October

    FT: Como 4-1 Manchester United

    Kasper Schmeichel
Former Celtic goalkeeper on 5 Live

I fully expect that meetings have been had, but this could be one of those, and I have only had a couple of them in my career where you ask the manager to leave the dressing room because words need to be had between the players.

I hope those conversations go on, but my impression is the way that football goes on now these type of conversations where you dig each other out a little bit, tell some hard truths don't seen to occur as much.

People tend to communicate through the media, it's an easier way to communicate but I hope that the leadership, Bruno Fernandes being the captain, would step up and say some words. I know Harry Maguire from playing with him will say some words as well, but it has to come from the captain.

On Harry Kane and the Ballon d'Or...

I've got Lamine Yamal ahead of him. I just think from the point of view of... such a young player carrying the weight of expectation going into a World Cup, winning the World Cup.

I think the World Cup will push him over to win it.

On Bukayo Saka going off injured...

For him to be out now, possibly for a prolonged period of time, it's a big blow for them because I think the best version of them always features him on the right-hand side.

I think there will be ex-players now from Manchester United saying, 'why are you letting this get out, this should be a collective in the changing room where we come together'. Whether you like the manager or not, you've got to come together and say 'OK how do we correct this'.

Senior players go to the manager and say 'listen we didn't agree with the tactics, we didn't think we got it right, how do we go about this, how do we move forward' because you start airing it in public and it doesn't end well for anyone.

  10. 'I don't get impression they are going to rip up template'published at 23:09 BST 21 October

    FT: Como 4-1 Manchester United

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport Manchester United reporter in Como

It's not easy to see someone like Antonio Conte going into Manchester United and living at peace with the ownership. I can't see that because he has never done it anywhere else, and that's not really worked at Man Utd when you look at people like Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal to an extent, but I'm not sure that Manchester United are set up in that way and I don't get the sense that they are going to rip up the template of what they had.

I think the problem for Manchester United is that again, in the summer of 2024 they had a good think about Erik ten Hag to be their manager, they gave him some money to spend in the transfer window and sacked him in October.

The following year last summer they did something similar with Ruben Amorim and then sacked him in January, but many people thought he could have gone a long time before that. And now, they are in a similar position again. I don't get the impression that they are going to rip up the template. But you have to look back over three years and think are the decisions being made the right decisions, and it doesn't look like it.

As annoying as it is drawing to Bayern and only getting a point, it’s nice remembering that we aren’t Man Utd fans. I had Carrick as the first sacked manager at the start of the season.

During the game, Bruno kept going to press by himself. Felt sorry for him when watching but now it just looks like he ignored the managers instructions which in turn left gaping holes behind him - a big factor in the result. Not a great look for your captain!

When you are not confident on a football pitch, your automatic reaction is retreat, sit still and sort of let the game come onto you and see it. That doesn't work at the highest level and that's what they're suffering from.

  15. 'Man Utd need to decide who will be in charge against Bournemouth'published at 23:01 BST 21 October

    FT: Como 4-1 Manchester United

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport Manchester United reporter in Como

I think Michael Carrick is almost struggling for answers at the moment.

I don't know if it's the angriest he's been, I think he's been quite forceful in his pre-match press conferences with the media lately, I have been on the wrong end of that. He does it in quite a calm way, not like Sir Alex Ferguson but I think he's trying to be on the front foot and today is just a really bad day.

I immediately thought when he went to the fans, acknowledging them like he did, hands in the air, four or five times, was a bit like Ole Gunnar Solskjær who did something very similar after a 4-1 defeat to Watford. He admitted that he knew at half-time in that game that his time at Manchester United would come to an end.

Now, United have flown straight back after the game so presumably there will be a lot of thought going on on that plane as it heads back to Manchester. But, first of all, Manchester United need to decide who will be in charge of that game against Bournemouth on Sunday, and Bournemouth aren't in brilliant form, they won the last game, but they have only won one game this season, and they are playing tomorrow night so Manchester United should be really looking to win that game even though Bournemouth have a fantastic record at Old Trafford.

Do Manchester United give Michael Carrick that game and see from there, or do they think we need to make a change?

Manchester United didn't know how to press, when to press. The intensity just wasn't there so I totally understand what Michael Carrick is saying, if you don't run off the ball, forward and back, you're not going to get results.

I'm sure Manchester United fans are sat at home now saying 'what's next, where do we go from here?'.

  17. 'A huge issue'published at 22:57 BST 21 October

    FT: Como 4-1 Manchester United

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Man City defender on MOTD: UEFA Champions League

For them [Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes] to be clashing with their messaging after such a tough defeat is a huge issue because you want everybody to sort of come together, try and figure out a way to get through difficult times on the same page but for those two it definitely doesn't seem to be the case.

  18. Have Man Utd lost their 'aura'?published at 22:55 BST 21 October

    FT: Como 4-1 Manchester United

    Matt Upson
Former Arsenal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

There is a grace period you have, I think when you have been as great as what that club is. Time surpasses when it becomes normalised, you lose the aura of what Manchester United was. Whenever I played or pulled up at Old Trafford it was a very unpleasant experience on the feild and that was felt by many a player and a club over that period.

It is now quite a good place to go and turn Manchester United over and that is becoming the norm so that's a dangerous thing for a club that had that kind of aura that won matches before a ball was kicked.

  19. 'Overall we were better'published at 22:54 BST 21 October

    FT: Aston Villa 3-1 Viking

    Aston Villa

Villa boss Unai Emery told TNT Sports: "We played a very safe match.

"First half we dominated. We were feeling comfortable. The second half we started not like the first half and conceded some corners. In 90 minutes overall we were better and dominated more than less.

"We're so happy how we're getting those three points."

Neutral here: the lack of patience is baffling. Last season, Carrick gave United their brightest spark since Fergie. Trophies or not, the post-Ferguson era proved you can't just buy instant glory. Give the manager time to bed in. It's not the 00s anymore.
