Henry fires Gunners to victory

1860 Munich 1-3 Arsenal

Arsenal striker Thierry Henry scored a hat-trick as the Gunners overcame a spirited 1860 Munich side in Innsbruck.

The French forward looked to be on top form after his World Cup disappointment as he led Arsene Wenger's side to victory in the pre-season friendly.

Henry opened the scoring with four minutes left in the first half, but it was in controversial circumstances.

With a Munich player lying injured on the ground, Edu played the ball through to Dennis Bergkamp.

Despite looking suspiciously offside the Dutchman drew keeper Simon Jentzsch and slipped the ball to the unmarked Henry to finish the move off.

The furious Germans had to wait until the 65th minute before exacting revenge, with former Bristol City striker Paul Agostino heading home Harald Cerny's excellent right-wing cross.

Late strikes

Arsenal appeared to lose control of the game and Patrick Vieira was lucky to only see yellow for a two-footed lunge on Marcus Weissenberger two minutes after the equaliser.

Agostino had a great chance to put the Bavarians ahead with 10 minutes remaining, but he dragged his shot wide.

And the German side were made to pay when Henry added two goals in the final eight minutes.

The first came after substitute Jeremie Aliadiere rounded an on-rushing Jentzsch, struck his shot against the post only for the ball to fall to Henry to tap in from three yards.

The Frenchman's hat-trick came three minutes from the end, courtesy of a fine volley after a Bergkamp cross from the right.

It was a good night's work for the Double winners, following on from their victories over Panathinaikos and AS Roma in Austria.
