Sections of giant artwork arrive

'Temenos' is the first of five planned massive public artworks

The first pieces of steel work for a large public artwork are set to arrive on Teesside.

Temenos, a sculpture of steel cables stretched between two giant rings, is the first of the five planned "Tees Valley Giants".

The £2.7m structure, to be situated close to Middlesbrough's famous Transporter Bridge, will stand 164ft (50m) high and 360ft (110m) long.

Sections of the rings will arrive at Middlehaven dock on Thursday morning.

The pieces, some weighing up to 23 tonnes, will be welded together on the site.

The sculpture, which has been created by artist Anish Kapoor and structural designer Cecil Balmond, is expected to be completed by the winter.

Four other artworks in the Tees Valley Giants series are planned for Stockton, Hartlepool, Darlington and Redcar.

Together, they will form one of the biggest public art projects in the world.

Temenos is a Greek word meaning land cut off and assigned as a sanctuary or holy area.
