Village green plan on school site

Plans to relocate a County Durham village school are to be reconsidered after residents applied to register the proposed site as a village green.

In March, the council agreed plans to rebuild Esh Winning Primary School on land in the centre of the village.

However, members of a residents' group then secured £50,000 lottery funding to develop a new play area on the land.

Proposals to rebuild the school on its existing site will be considered at a county council meeting on 7 October.

Councillor Claire Vasey, cabinet member for children and young people's services, said: "The new plans for a play area means that the situation has changed from when the original decision was made regarding the location of the new Esh Winning Primary School.

"In these circumstances, it is only right and proper that we look again at the original decision in terms of any impact it may have on the plans for the additional community facilities which are proposed."
