School road safety plans welcomed

Plans for new safety measures around the site of the new Les Nicolles school in Guernsey have been welcomed by a pedestrian safety group.

The Environment Department is planning to introduce what it is calling a Pedestrian Priority Zone.

Walkways will be painted on roads and some roads will have a reduced speed limit during school hours.

Safety group STEPS said the plans were a small step in the right direction, but added that more could be done.

Since the new school was proposed on the former Les Nicolles Vinery Site, islanders have had concerns about how pupils will get to the school.

It is proposed most students will travel by bus. But, for those walking, narrow roads and lack of pavements in the area have caused fears about safety.

As well as the painted walkways and speed limit, the department is also planning to put in place a pedestrian crossing point at Oatlands.

The safety group said the new proposals were appreciated, but added that it believed that the Environment Department had missed the opportunity to take what it called a "really courageous decision" to introduce a one-way system around the campus.

St Sampson's High School is due to open in September.
