There has been a significant rise in the number of people asking for help after using 'legal highs' in Guernsey, Drug Concern has said. Manager Tracey Rear said in 2008 "drugs of emerging concern" or legal highs had become an issue. She said during 2009 the numbers using the service remained steady but there was "a significant increase in younger people seeking help". She said by the end of the year 17% of enquiries were about legal highs. In the charity's annual report it said 300 people, including 202 new users, asked for help from the charity during 2009. Legal highs are used as alternatives to some illegal drugs. In November the import and export of legal highs was completely banned after a commercial ban was introduced in April.
