Funds to boost farming industry
Jersey cow
There are only 34 farms left with Jersey cattle
A trust fund has been set up to get more people interested in Jersey's farming industry.

The Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society is hoping to halt a fall in the number of island farms.

There are 34 farms with Jersey cattle, and the Society has a total of 123 cattle-owning members - a fall of 27 on last year.

The fund will give grants to people who want to research areas of agriculture or horticulture beneficial to Jersey.

Despite the general decline in the faming industry, the Society says it has a good number of junior members.

It is also encouraging youngsters who are not from a farming background but who want to learn about livestock to join the Society and "adopt" a farm.
