Island needs first aid volunteers

Jersey's first aid charity, the St John Ambulance, has said it needs more volunteers.

In its annual report, the service said there had been an increase in the number of public and sporting events which required its services.

The report said volunteers for the charity in Jersey gave a total of 24,000 hours of their time.

It added that in 2007 about 4% of the population in Jersey took a first aid course with the St John Ambulance.

Nigel Truscott, the bailiwick director for St John Ambulance, said the service needed people in support as well as frontline roles.

Last year researchers found Jersey's St John Ambulance trains five times more volunteers than the national average.
