Group win fight on recycling plan
Residents who battled to stop a recycling plant being built in Derby have won their fight.

About 2,000 people signed a petition against the recycling centre, which was planned for Spondon.

Waste firm R U Recycling has withdrawn its application to build the plant, which officials at Derby City Council said was needed in the area.

David Clarke, chairman of the Spondon Against Traffic Chaos group, welcomed the decision as "fantastic news".

He said: "Our main concern was the extra heavy lorries that would have been on Nottingham Road and considering there are children's nurseries and old people's homes right across the road then the decision is common sense."

A council spokeswoman said a plant needed to be built in the city as material is now recycled in Blackburn.
