Turbines moving at moor wind farm

The turbines on a wind farm on the moors between Lancashire and Greater Manchester are finally turning.

The Scout Moor project has been more than four years in the planning, with building work starting last year, despite some objections by residents.

The 26 turbines have already produced more than 4,000 MWh of electricity to be exported to the National Grid.

The wind farm is on moorland between Rossendale and Rochdale and is operated by the Peel Group.

Objections raised

An open day is being held on 27 September to allow the public to go on tours of the facility.

In the past, local residents teamed up with environmentalist David Bellamy to protest against the farm being built.

Objections by the Friends of Scout and Knowl Moor included problems with increased traffic, damage to an untouched landscape and the noise of the turbines as their blades turned in the wind.

Rossendale, Rochdale and Lancashire County Councils also opposed the scheme which was given the green light in May 2005 after a public inquiry.
