Staff working on the trams in Nottingham are asking passengers to be more courteous to them.
A new campaign is being supported by the GMB union which represents both conductors and drivers.
Respect for Transport in 2004, an earlier campaign, saw the number of assaults and spitting incidents on trams, buses and trains cut by half.
Union officials said some people are still verbally abusing staff which can be just as hurtful.
Tram workers will wear T-shirts during August, emblazoned with the slogan "courtesy costs nothing".
