Relief as flood water subsides

Flood water threatened homes in Tadmarton Road, Bloxham

A flooded leisure centre has reopened and residents whose homes narrowly avoided being flooded have expressed relief as water levels drop.

The River Cherwell in Banbury overflowed on Sunday, flooding part of the Spiceball Park Sports Centre.

Fire crews helped stop several homes in Bloxham being flooded by pumping water away and supplying sandbags.

Jean Curran from Tadmarton Road, whose home was flooded last year, said the water was just inches from her door.

"The gardens were filling up. We get flooded by water from Bloxham primary school. It comes out of the gates, across the road and down to us," she said.

Ms Curran believes her home would have been flooded if the fire service had not been there to help out.

"The drain below my house was bubbling up like a fountain and they pumped the water away, so I am really grateful to them," she said.

The Environment Agency said most rivers in Oxfordshire remain on "flood watch".

They include the River Thames and the Rivers Thame, Ray, Cherwell, Ock, Evenlode and Glyme.
