One of the main objectors to an £83m flood protection scheme for Elgin has withdrawn opposition, the day before a public inquiry into the plan starts.

Textiles company Johnstons of Elgin has reached agreement with Moray Council over the construction of flood defences.

The firm said it was now satisfied the work would not threaten operations.

The inquiry will still have to rule on arguments put forward by 24 further objectors.

Scores of residents had to move from their homes in Elgin during flooding earlier this month, the third major such incident in the area in 12 years.

A report by the council has estimated the latest repair bill at between £1.8m and £2.7m.
