Areas braced for springtime snow

Snow is forecast to affect large parts of central and southern Scotland

South and central Scotland is braced for heavy snow after a Met Office forecast, just days after the arrival of British Summer Time.

The warning for Tuesday covers Dumfries and Galloway, the Scottish Borders, Strathclyde, Tayside, Central and Fife.

Heavy rain is forecast but it will increasingly turn to snow over higher ground with as much as 30cm (12in) possible in some locations.

Blizzard conditions may be experienced at times due to strong winds.

Some accumulations of snow are also expected to fall at lower levels at least for a time during the day.

'Not unusual'

The Scottish Borders was badly affected by heavy snowfalls earlier this year.

All its schools were shut for a week in January and many roads were blocked.

The local council cancelled all its planned meetings for a time and clean-up operations are estimated to have cost more than £1m.

Met Office chief forecaster Will Lang said: "March weather is often very varied and snow is not unusual at this time of the year.

"Although there is some uncertainty about exact amounts of rain or snow, we will be closely monitoring this developing situation."
