Dapo Afolayan scored twice as Blackburn Rovers secured their second league win of the season and continued their good form against Millwall.

The former St Pauli forward was in the right place to cleverly deflect Sam Morsy's shot past Lions goalkeeper Max Crocombe and give Rovers a half-time lead.

After Lyndon Dykes had levelled from the penalty spot early in the second half, Afolayan ran from halfway before firing in his second, while striker Andri Gudjohnsen added a counter-attacking third deep in added time.

That made it four consecutive wins over the Lions for Blackburn, their best run against them since 1990, while Millwall have not won at Ewood Park in 11 visits.

Blackburn were unable to field a striker in their midweek home defeat by Sheffield United, although the return of Iceland international Gudjohnsen from injury eased that situation.

It was further helped by Afolayan's excellent performance, while Rovers showed some stoic defence as Millwall pressed hard for an equaliser.

Balasz Toth was back in goal for Blackburn and he saved with his legs from Camiel Neghli in a first half which was meandering towards a stalemate until Afolayan took a hand.

A cross from the right found Morsy lurking on the edge of the area and his shot looked too tame to beat Crocombe until Afolayan diverted its path and opened the scoring.

Blackburn suffered another injury worry at half-time as the impressive Ryan Alebiosu was forced off, and his replacement Gady Beyuku was still finding his feet when he unwisely slid in to challenge Tairyk Arconte.

Dykes, who scored twice against Bolton last week, made no mistake from the spot.

Afolayan soon lifted the spirits of the home fans by bursting into the Millwall half and, when Todd Cantwell's diagonal run drew the defensive cover, he switched the ball onto his left foot and fired in to the bottom corner to restore the lead.

Arconte had a goal disallowed after knocking home Jake Cooper's flick-on at the near-post, and had another effort brilliantly blocked by Hayden Carter, while Dykes headed narrowly wide as the Lions pushed hard for an equaliser while 2-1 down.

Rovers made sure of the points in the last of three added minutes as substitute Jayden Fevrier led a counter-attack and, when he squared for Beyuku, he allowed it to run to Gudjohnsen who calmly found the bottom corner.

Millwall manager Alex Neil told BBC Radio London:

"I said to the lads at half-time that the pace of the game, the tempo was flat and to concede made it even worse, because I didn't really think there was anything in the match.

"It was such a soft goal, a cut-back and we'd spoken about it all week, making sure we didn't get done down the sides and then cut-backs.

"I made a couple of changes at half-time to try to bring a little bit of life to the second half and we started the second half really well, got the penalty, got the goal, and looked like the team that was going to go on and win the game.

"The second goal was disappointing. We didn't get down the line of the ball quick enough and the lad shifts it onto his left foot and puts it in the corner.

"It's a wasted opportunity because we could have won the game today."

Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"We were probably more effective and efficient against Sheffield United but found a way to lose that game.

"There were some impressive individual performances and the substitutes didn't weaken the team. Andri Gudjohnsen was exceptional when he came on.

"If we'd lost today questions might have started to be asked. Consistency is what is required.

[On Afolayan] "He's a really bright, intelligent kid who loves football, who watches football, and has an opinion on everything.

"When I say 'You're not working hard enough' he has an answer and knows what I'm talking about, so I feel I can connect with him to make him the best version of himself, and that's not always the case with footballers."
