Razvan Marin's superb first-half free-kick was enough to earn AEK Athens a 1-0 victory over LASK in their opening Champions League league phase fixture.

Midway through the first half, Marin bent his effort from just outside of the penalty area over the wall, around the far post and past goalkeeper Lukas Jungwirth to separate Greek side AEK and their Austrian opponents.

AEK should have been further clear before half-time. Former Real Madrid and AC Milan striker Luka Jovic found himself clear on goal three minutes in, but saw his effort denied by the face of Jungwirth.

Jovic later thought he had doubled his side's lead shortly after the hour mark, only for his brilliant header to be disallowed for an offside in the build-up.

Hungary international Barnabas Varga also squandered two big chances late in the half for AEK, the latter a header that he could not steer on target.

LASK were making their full debut in the competition following their historic 5-4 aggregate victory over Celtic in the final round of qualifying last month.

Their best chance to level the game came in second half stoppage time. Striker Sasa Kalajdzic, formerly of Wolves, headed over at the end of a late free-kick when home goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli was stranded on the floor.

For AEK, it was their first victory in the full rounds of the Champions League since 2006.

LASK's first ever Champions League home match is against Liverpool following the international break. AEK will head to London to face Shakhtar Donetsk, with the Ukrainian club playing their Champions League matches at Stamford Bridge this season.
