Women's swimming costumes have evolved in a similar way to the men's.
The materials have switched from wool to man-made fabrics and the costumes tend to cover a larger area of the body.
Some female swimmers now wear a full body suit.
This covers everything from the shoulders to the ankles. Top swimwear producers such as Speedo, Adidas, Arena and Diana are constantly battling to take suits to the next level.
They claim the suit allows the swimmer to hold a better core body position in the water and helps them to travel further after the turns.
