Minister's jibe at safety plans

Guernsey's education minister says attempts to solve the traffic calming measures at a new secondary school have been "half-hearted".

Martin Ozanne said he was disappointed it had taken two years to come up with proposals at Les Nicolles.

Environment said it would make the area a Pedestrian Priority Zone (PPZ).

Pat Wisher from pedestrian safety group Steps said Environment and Education should have worked more closely together to control traffic.

The PPZ means walkways will be painted on roads and some roads will have a reduced speed limit during school hours.

Since the new St Sampson's High School was proposed on the former Les Nicolles Vinery Site, islanders have had concerns about how pupils will get to the school.

As well as the painted walkways and speed limit, the Environment Department is also planning to put in place a pedestrian crossing point at Oatlands.

St Sampson's High School is due to open in September.
