Sheep help upkeep of Trust land

Grazing sheep are helping to maintain the island's coastline
Sheep are being used to help maintain National Trust land in Jersey.

Paul Holley, from the trust, said grazing sheep helped maintain the coastline and stopped it becoming overgrown with bracken and scrub.

The number of sheep has been in steady decline over the last 100 years as farmers have changed to producing other farming products.

But Mr Holley said more sheep were now being kept and that was good news for heathland and other areas.

"If these areas are no longer grazed or managed in any other way they tend to get very overgrown and lose a lot of their wildlife interest and you get a greater risk of catastrophic furze fires.

"Grazing, if it is done properly, can be a very good management tool for conservation."
