Labour have bucked the national trend by taking control of Leicester City Council.

They wrested control of the previously hung council by grabbing 18 seats to boost their group to 38.

The Lib Dems were the main victims of the surge - losing 11 seats, with the Tories suffering two losses and seven independents being forced out.

However, the Green party also gained two seats on the new council, which Labour runs with a 22-seat majority.
