Drivers are being warned of delays as plans for improvements to a notoriously congested road are unveiled.
The 10m project for the A34 between Peartree and Weston-on-the-Green in Oxfordshire is expected to begin in mid-September, and take six months.
The Highways Agency says the works will improve safety and produce a quieter road surface for local residents.
It admits it will result in delays for road users and recommends drivers allow more time or find other routes.
The agency is providing drivers and local residents with information through electronic newsletters, leaflets and local letter drops.
The A34, which links Southampton with Oxford and the Midlands, already suffers major problems with congestion.
The Highways Agency says most of the work will be carried out overnight and two lanes will be open during the day.
Highways Agency project sponsor, Peter Scott said: "We are taking this opportunity to carry out as much maintenance work as possible now, with a view to reducing the additional maintenance that would have been required over the next few years.
"We want to make sure people using this stretch of the A34 have advance warning that these roadworks will be taking place, and that the work includes working over the weekend.
"People also need to be aware that the works will cause disruption to traffic, but in the longer term drivers will benefit from a smoother, quieter, thicker and safer road."
