Alex Salmond launched the SNP campaign at a renewable energy company

The SNP has launched its European election campaign with a pledge to protect Scottish jobs and boost economic recovery.

Party leader and Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond set out his stall at a renewable energy company in Edinburgh's Leith area.

He said his was the only party offering a strong voice for Scotland in Europe.

Millions of voters across 27 countries will go to the polls to elect 736 MEPs between 4 June and 7 June.

Scotland will return six MEPs, one less than in the previous European Parliament.

Mr Salmond highlighted the importance of green jobs on a visit to Pelamis Wave Power, which builds wave power generators being deployed off Orkney.

He said: "Pelamis Wave Power is an excellent example of Scottish success.

"We are developing groundbreaking technology which will put Scotland at the forefront of Europe's renewable revolution and create 16,000 green jobs in Scotland over the next decade."

SNP European candidate Ian Hudghton MEP added: "Our commitment is clear - as part of a strong SNP team we will work flat out to protect jobs.

"SNP MEPs provide the strongest voice for your concerns in Europe and the more SNP MEPs we return to the European Parliament the louder this voice will be."
