1955: Gordon Pirie

Pirie's successful track career continued until 1961, but a silver in Melbourne was the closest he came to gold in any of his three Olympics.

A fiery and outspoken character, Pirie emigrated to New Zealand in 1956.

He returned to Fordle, near Lymington, in 1987, but died of cancer four years later.
