An arthritic top finger joint finally brought an end to Laker�s Test career in 1959.

He made sporadic appearances for Essex in the early 1960s and also caused a few waves in the cricket world with his autobiography.

But all was soon forgiven and he later became a highly respected TV commentator until his death in 1986.
