Awarded the CBE in 1958, the popular Welshman enjoyed a long career.

He is widely regarded as one of the best golfers never to the win the Open Championship � coming closest in 1961, when he finished second to Arnold Palmer at Royal Birkdale.

Twice captain of the PGA, he was made an Honorary Member of the R&A before his death in 1983.
