Mr Mzoudi admits knowing the 9/11 hijackers

A German court orders the release from custody of Abdelghani Mzoudi, a Moroccan man standing trial for being an accessory to the 11 September 2001 attacks on the US.

Mr Mzoudi was arrested in October 2002 and charged with being a member of the Hamburg-based al-Qaeda cell which carried out the 11 September 2001 attacks. At the start of his trial in August 2003 he admitted that he knew the hijackers, but not of their plans.

His release comes after new evidence from an unnamed source was submitted by Germany's federal criminal investigation bureau (BKA).

An audiotape reportedly from Al-Qaeda deputy Ayman al-Zawahri taunts the US over its efforts to stabilise Afghanistan.

The tape, broadcast by Arabic TV station al-Jazeera, says US forces have failed in Afghanistan and warns that al-Qaeda is pursuing Americans "everywhere".



In an audiotape purportedly from Osama Bin Laden, the al-Qaeda leader says the war in Iraq is part of a "crusade" against Muslims.

No date for the tape, broadcast by the al-Arabiya satellite channel, is given.
